3-MCPD

  • The Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries’ introduction on 3-MCPD and international requirements

In 1996, the European Union’s Scientific Committee on Food (SCF*) identified 3-MCPD as a carcinogen and stated that it should not be detected in any food by any analytical method. However, subsequent research results led to the conclusion in 2001 that 3-MCPD is not carcinogenic. As it is not a carcinogen, a tolerable daily intake (TDI) for 3-MCPD should be established, and it was suggested that this intake should be 2 µg/kg body weight. To this end, the European Commission (EC) set maximum limits for 3-MCPD in acid-hydrolyzed vegetable protein and soy sauce in March 2001. In addition, in October of the same year, ten countries (including one non-EU member Norway) investigated the actual situation of chloropropanol in food and published a survey report on the EU website in June 2004.
